How do I determine how much memory my server has?
For
example:
nickel: tmp# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 63260 58644 4616 29756 30712 12132
-/+ buffers: 15800 47460
Swap: 66020 8072 57948
nickel: tmp#
How do I determine how much disk space is available on my server?
For example:
nickel: /tmp# df -k
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda1 63885 18010 42576 30% /
/dev/hda3 9417230 839205 8089448 9% /usr
nickel:/tmp#
How many domains can my server support?
That depends on the amount of RAM and CPU your server has, and,
more importantly, what the domains are doing. A 450Mhz/256Meg-RAM
server might only accommodate one domain if that domain was running
resource-intensive programs, such as searches or chatrooms; whereas,
a 75Mhz/32Meg-RAM server might easily support 250 domains if none
of the domains were calling server-side programs.
A good rule of thumb is to monitor the average load on your server.
If the average server load is consistently over 2.0, you should
consider upgrading your server, or procuring an additional server.
How can I determine the load on my server?
For example:
nickel: /tmp# uptime
7:29pm up 104 days, 1:10, 1 user, load average: 0.29, 0.28, 0.27
nickel: /tmp#
Can my server be upgraded?
Certainly. Send upgrade requests to sales.
Upgrades are generally accomplished in 1-to-3 hours from the time
that they are begun.
Can I replace the kernel with a different version?
Absolutely NO. Colossus policy mandates that a standard kernel be
run on all Colossus servers.
Users can move about the server. How can I restrict their movement?
Under Unix, you cannot restrict such user movement. You should make
no attempts to do so or you will quickly disable your server. Be
assured that your server is secure and such user movement poses
no threat to server security.
